The Festival’s first year was 1994 – the 75 th Anniversary of the Winnipeg General Strike. It was those anniversary celebrations that prompted a number of trade union activists to launch MayWorks.

He was awarded the Min Sook Lee Labour Arts Award, Mayworks Festival of Working People in the Arts in 2024. Ware is a Vanier Scholar and a Sylff Fellow.
