WebOVS uses OpenFlow for control of flows and OVSDB for configuration. OVS uses the sFlow protocol for packet sampling and monitoring. The code has been ported to work with multiple switching chipsets and has thus found a home in several hardware switches as well. WebAn OpenFlow Controller is just a software package that interfaces with the switch via the OpenFlow API, and pushes routing rules. In a situation where you had a hardware-based openflow switch, the controller would reside on a separate host.
